Shadow and Bone Tops List of TV Cancellations Saddening Brits

Sam AllcockBy Sam Allcock07/08/20243 Mins Read

New data reveals that Netflix drama Shadow and Bone is the most mourned TV show cancellation in the UK, as Brits express their disappointment over the streaming giant’s decision. The information, compiled by casino comparison website InstantCasinos, highlights the series that viewers miss the most following their cancellations by either Netflix or Prime Video.

The study examined 209 cancelled shows and analysed Google search data around each show’s cancellation, including queries such as “Will there be another season of [show]?” and “Has [show] been cancelled?” The findings indicate a significant level of public sentiment and engagement with these series.

Shadow and Bone Leads the Pack

Topping the list is Shadow and Bone, which averages 968.3 monthly searches from fans eager for its return. Premiering in 2021, the series follows orphan Alina Starkov, who discovers her ability to alter the fate of her war-torn world. Despite its initial success, the show’s viewership declined after the first season. Critics noted that the second season was “overstuffed,” complicating plotlines and making episodes harder to follow, which likely led to its cancellation.

Other Notable Cancellations

In second place is Lockwood & Co., with 401.7 average monthly searches. Set in a ghost-ridden London, the show features three teenagers battling paranormal forces. Despite its intriguing premise, the series, released in early 2023, did not meet Netflix’s viewership targets and was cancelled after one season.

Ranking third is 1899, a multilingual science fiction series about mysterious events altering the course of an immigrant ship to New York. With 234.2 monthly searches, 1899 captivated audiences but failed to achieve a sufficient completion rate for renewal. Only 32% of viewers finished the series, falling short of the 50% threshold typically needed for a continuation.

Further Down the List

Daredevil comes in fourth with 227.5 searches per month. The Marvel series, featuring lawyer-turned-vigilante Matt Murdock, was cancelled in 2018 along with other Marvel franchises on Netflix. These series were later removed from Netflix and added to Disney+ in 2022.

In fifth place is Raising Dion, averaging 178.3 searches monthly. The show, which aired from 2019, follows a widowed mother managing her young son’s superpowers and investigating her husband’s death. Its cancellation after the second season left fans and cast members disheartened, with lead actress Alisha Wainwright expressing her sorrow on social media.

The Top Ten

The list of most-missed shows continues with The OA in sixth place (173.3 searches), Altered Carbon seventh (155.8 searches), GLOW eighth (143.3 searches), The Order ninth (137.5 searches), and Transparent tenth (128.3 searches). Each of these series had unique challenges leading to their cancellations, ranging from production shutdowns due to COVID-19 to controversies and low viewership.

Industry Insights

Kenneth Moore, Editor in Chief of InstantCasinos, commented on the findings: “It’s always hard when your favourite show gets cancelled, especially when storylines haven’t yet been wrapped up. Various factors influence a streaming service’s decision not to renew a series, with revenue being paramount. Even programmes cancelled over five years ago are still discussed, signalling to companies that loyal supporters are equally as important as financial gain.”

The data underscores the impact of TV show cancellations on dedicated fanbases and highlights the delicate balance streaming services must maintain between financial viability and audience satisfaction.
