A recent study by SumUp, a leading global fintech company, has identified the best cities in the UK for independent business owners who are also raising families. The research evaluates various factors including rent and utility costs, as well as amenities for children such as schools and playgrounds.
Navigating the dual challenges of running a business and nurturing a family is no easy feat. However, SumUp’s latest report highlights several UK cities that provide a supportive environment for both small businesses and family life. The study assessed eleven criteria, encompassing monthly business expenses, green spaces, and educational facilities, to determine which locations offer the most conducive conditions for entrepreneurial parents.
According to the report, London, Belfast, and Leeds emerge as the top three cities for business owners with growing families.
London leads the list with a total score of 6.949. Despite the high cost of living, including elevated rent and utility bills, London stands out for its extensive range of activities and facilities for children. The city boasts 724 child-friendly activities, 181 playgrounds, 168 entertainment centres, and 92 sports camps. This vibrant environment, despite the financial pressures, makes London an attractive option for those balancing business and family life.
Belfast follows in second place with a score of 5.785. The city excels in its abundance of green spaces, which make up 44.52% of its area, including parks and community gardens. Additionally, Belfast has a commendable safety index of 53.69, providing a secure setting for families and business owners alike.
Leeds ranks third with a score of 5.688. It is recognised for its strong educational infrastructure, featuring 169 schools and 170 nurseries. Leeds also offers considerable green space, with 41.90% of the city designated as parks and nature areas, enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
The report also highlights other notable cities. Liverpool is noted for its affordability, offering the lowest average monthly rent in the top ten cities at £815.62, which can help entrepreneurs allocate more resources towards business development and family needs. Meanwhile, Newcastle upon Tyne is praised for its safety, achieving a high safety score of 61.97, which is crucial for families seeking a secure environment.
The research underscores the importance of a balanced environment for business owners who are also committed to family life. Corin Camenisch, Product Marketing Lead at SumUp, commented on the findings: “Running a business while raising a family presents unique challenges. Our study aims to spotlight UK cities that support both small business growth and family wellbeing.
