Oxnard, California, has welcomed John Campbell, Scotland’s renowned Master Distiller, as the new Chief Operating Officer of Sespe Creek Distillery. Known for its offerings, including Warbringer Whiskey, Silvergrin Vodka, and Parlor Cay Rum, the distillery aims to make a mark in the American craft spirits landscape.
Campbell, who boasts a storied career in the whisky industry, spent 17 years leading Scotland’s famed Laphroaig distillery before serving as Master Distiller at Lochlea Distillery in the Lowlands for three years. His move to California marks a significant transition in his career and represents the aspirations of an emerging craft spirits producer eager to make waves both in the United States and globally.
Alfred English, owner of Sespe Creek Distillery, spoke highly of Campbell’s appointment, stating, “There is no overstating the significance of John’s appointment at Sespe Creek Distillery. Over the past two decades, very few have had a greater impact on the whisky space. Bringing him in represents a significant shot across the bow to let the industry know there’s a formidable player here on California’s Central Coast.”
As the incoming COO, Campbell will take charge of the distillery’s diverse portfolio, which includes the Warbringer Mesquite Smoked Southwest Bourbon, Parlor Cay Rum, and Silvergrin Vodka. His expertise is expected to elevate the brand and attract attention within the competitive spirits market.
In his own words, Campbell expressed enthusiasm for his new role: “I am thrilled to accept the role of COO and Master Distiller at Sespe Creek Distillery. The challenge of working in new spirits categories, and in a new country, makes this such an exciting time in my life. I can’t wait to get going and for what lies ahead.”
Additionally, Campbell’s appointment marks the start of a pioneering collaboration with UFC fighters Josh “Warmaster” Barnett and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, who have each established sub-brands under the Warbringer Bourbon label. Barnett’s Warmaster Edition has gained a loyal following after being featured on The Joe Rogan Show, where it was highlighted as one of the host’s preferred whiskies. Cerrone’s Cowboy Edition debuted with much anticipation at UFC 300 in Las Vegas.
As Campbell prepares to take on his new responsibilities, Sespe Creek Distillery is also gearing up for future developments. Currently operating as a production-only distillery, it has plans to unveil a tasting room in the first half of 2025. This expansion aims to enhance visitor engagement and provide an immersive experience for fans of craft spirits.
John Campbell’s arrival at Sespe Creek Distillery signals a bold new chapter for the brand, promising to introduce innovative products to the American market while honouring the rich traditions of whisky-making he has mastered throughout his illustrious career.
