As the UK braces for a heatwave hotter than parts of Spain this week, fire safety experts from Chorlton Fireworks have revealed the surprising items in your home that could become explosive – or dangerously unstable – when left in hot conditions.
From deodorant cans to forgotten fireworks, many common products become hazardous when exposed to prolonged heat, particularly in cars, sheds, garages, or lofts – all of which can reach over 50°C during a typical UK heatwave.
Top 5 Items That Could Explode or Ignite in a Heatwave:
- Aerosol Cans – Hairspray, deodorant, cooking sprays and air fresheners can explode if left in hot cars or direct sunlight.
- Batteries – Power banks, e-cigarette batteries, and even toys with lithium batteries can overheat and cause fires.
- BBQ Gas Canisters – Often stored incorrectly in garages or sheds, these can explode if pressure builds up in the heat.
- Fireworks – Even unused fireworks stored from New Year or Bonfire Night can ignite if kept in high temperatures.
- Cleaning Products – Bleach and other chemicals can react dangerously when overheated or mixed by accident.
“People don’t realise they’re sitting on a summer fire risk,” says fire safety spokesperson at Chorlton Fireworks.
“We’re urging households to check where items are stored – especially in places like garages, lofts or car boots. A forgotten firework or a gas canister in direct sun could easily turn a heatwave into a disaster.”
The warning comes as temperatures in the UK are expected to exceed 30°C in parts of the country – higher than Madrid, Lisbon and Athens this week.
Quick Fire Safety Tips During a Heatwave:
- Store fireworks and gas canisters in cool, dry areas away from sunlight and heat sources
- Never leave aerosols or batteries in parked cars
- Dispose of out-of-date or damaged fireworks properly
- Keep lighters, matches and BBQ equipment out of reach of children
- Check outdoor storage areas for flammable chemicals or items
