The most popular dog names for 2024 have been revealed – with ‘Teddy’ topping the charts.
Naming a new furry friend is one of the most exciting parts of welcoming them into your family, and Quotezone’s latest data highlights the trends shaping dog names this year and going into 2025.
For dogs born and insured in 2024, Teddy has emerged as the nation’s favourite name, closely followed by Luna and Lola.
Rounding out the top ten dog names for 2024 are Milo, Bella, Daisy, Reggie, Poppy, Willow, and Max.
This year’s list shows a preference for short, snappy names, which reflects their ease of use during training and everyday interactions.
Rather than traditional canine names like Rover and Fido, most names on this year’s list could easily belong to human family members, which also shows how many people see their pets as integral members of the family.
In 2023, 57% of UK households owned a pet, highlighting the nation’s growing love for animal companions.*
And according to a 2024 survey, dogs are the most commonly owned pet in the UK, with 36% of households reportedly owning a dog.**
Catherine Boyd, pet insurance expert at Quotezone.co.uk, commented on the data: “With pet ownership becoming more and more popular, choosing the right name for our canine companions is an important decision.
“When naming a pet, owners often consider factors such as the pet’s personality, ease of training, and how the name fits into the household dynamic.
“Dog trainers often recommend short, snappy names with one or two syllables, as they are easier for both dogs to recognise and for owners to call.
“I’m actually in the process of naming our new pup at the moment – Mabel and Tilly are favourites in our house too but this little rascal feels more like a Nora!
“But it’s interesting to note that many of the names in the top 20 reflect the humanisation of our pets. Names like Bella and Max are indistinguishable from those we might choose for children, which aligns with how pets are increasingly seen as full-fledged family members.
“It’s also curious to see how popular culture is affecting the choice of names, with hit movie characters and celebrity children in the mix.
“Legally, once owners have decided on a name for their furry friend, all dogs must wear a collar, tag and be microchipped with their full details and yours, including a contact number, house number and postcode – to help keep pets safe and their insurance cover protected.
“Not microchipping dogs could invalidate pet insurance and land pet lovers with a £500 fine.”
