Bradford Housing Association Supports Refugees with Digital Tech Donations
Bradford-based Manningham Housing Association (MHA) has donated a range of digital equipment to Solidaritech, a local community interest company focused on repurposing tech for refugees and asylum seekers. The donated equipment includes laptops, power leads, and smartphones, all of which will be reconditioned and distributed by Solidaritech to help digitally excluded individuals gain essential online access.
The support from MHA marks a significant contribution to Solidaritech’s mission of narrowing the digital divide among migrants and asylum seekers in the UK. Founded in 2017, Solidaritech works by collecting unused digital devices from businesses and individuals, refurbishing them, and distributing them to refugees across Yorkshire and the Humber region. To date, the company has provided over 4,000 devices, which aid recipients in accessing essential services, pursuing education, and developing careers.
Ben McKenna, founder and CEO of Solidaritech, visited MHA’s headquarters on Manor Row to accept the donation and to express his appreciation for the contribution. “Solidaritech is immensely grateful to Manningham Housing Association for their support. These laptops will directly benefit our clients, providing vital access to services and allowing people to gain qualifications, find employment, and establish new businesses. Manningham’s commitment to helping Bradford’s diverse communities aligns seamlessly with our mission of achieving digital inclusion for everyone,” McKenna said.
Lee Bloomfield, chief executive of MHA, highlighted how Solidaritech’s objectives resonate with the housing association’s commitment to inclusivity and support for the local community. “Solidaritech has a positive impact on the lives of digitally excluded individuals, enabling them to thrive in the UK. We are proud to support Ben and his team in providing digital access to those who need it most,” said Bloomfield. He also encouraged others with unused tech to consider donating. “This is a great way for organisations and individuals to contribute to an inclusive digital future.”
The donated equipment is carefully refurbished by Solidaritech’s operations team, who ensure each device is thoroughly wiped, repaired if needed, and equipped with the resources to meet a variety of needs. From supporting educational pursuits to enabling the recognition of overseas qualifications, the devices serve as a lifeline for many who would otherwise face challenges in accessing online services.
MHA’s involvement with Solidaritech reflects its dedication to social impact initiatives that help bridge gaps within Bradford’s diverse community. Solidaritech’s reach is substantial, having connected thousands of individuals to opportunities they might otherwise miss due to a lack of access to technology.
Both organisations hope this donation will inspire other companies and individuals to contribute their unused tech, providing a valuable resource for those striving to establish new lives in the UK.
