Sir Michael Barber KB has been appointed as the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Effective Delivery, a role aimed at advancing the delivery of the UK’s five national missions. The appointment was announced by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and will see Sir Michael, a renowned expert in implementing large-scale change, support Prime Minister Keir Starmer in driving forward ambitious and measurable objectives across the country.
The role, which is a Direct Ministerial appointment and unpaid, will see Sir Michael work part-time for an initial 12-month period starting in September 2024. His responsibilities will include coordinating efforts to achieve the national missions, which encompass goals related to the economy, energy, public safety, equal opportunities, and the NHS.
Sir Michael Barber brings a wealth of experience to the position, having worked internationally to effect systemic change. His extensive background includes advisory roles with several recent Prime Ministers and senior Ministers. Notably, he served as an adviser on skills delivery to the former Chancellor of the Exchequer and Secretary of State for Education between 2022 and 2023. Additionally, he was Chief Adviser to the Secretary of State for Education on school standards from 1997 to 2001, Head of the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit from 2001 to 2005, and Chair of the Office for Students from 2017 to 2021.
