Sir Michael Barber Appointed Prime Minister’s Adviser on Delivery

Sam AllcockBy Sam Allcock12/09/20243 Mins Read

Sir Michael Barber KB has been appointed as the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Effective Delivery, a role aimed at advancing the delivery of the UK’s five national missions. The appointment was announced by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and will see Sir Michael, a renowned expert in implementing large-scale change, support Prime Minister Keir Starmer in driving forward ambitious and measurable objectives across the country.

The role, which is a Direct Ministerial appointment and unpaid, will see Sir Michael work part-time for an initial 12-month period starting in September 2024. His responsibilities will include coordinating efforts to achieve the national missions, which encompass goals related to the economy, energy, public safety, equal opportunities, and the NHS.

Sir Michael Barber brings a wealth of experience to the position, having worked internationally to effect systemic change. His extensive background includes advisory roles with several recent Prime Ministers and senior Ministers. Notably, he served as an adviser on skills delivery to the former Chancellor of the Exchequer and Secretary of State for Education between 2022 and 2023. Additionally, he was Chief Adviser to the Secretary of State for Education on school standards from 1997 to 2001, Head of the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit from 2001 to 2005, and Chair of the Office for Students from 2017 to 2021.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his enthusiasm for Sir Michael’s appointment, stating, “By changing the way we govern this country – through setting long-term goals on the economy, energy, safer streets, breaking down barriers of opportunity, and building an NHS fit for the future – we can rebuild the public’s trust in our politics and deliver the change Britain needs. I’m delighted Sir Michael will be supporting us to change lives for the better as we fix the foundations and deliver our five national missions.”

In his response, Sir Michael Barber said, “It is an honour to be asked to take on this role. The five missions are vital to the future of the country, and I look forward to assisting the Prime Minister with their delivery.” His appointment is seen as a strategic move to ensure that the national missions are implemented effectively, aligning with the government’s broader objectives to drive meaningful and long-lasting change across the UK.

The announcement of Sir Michael’s role underscores the government’s commitment to tackling major national challenges and achieving its policy goals. His extensive experience in delivery and system change is expected to play a crucial role in the successful realisation of the Prime Minister’s vision for the country.
