A new study from The National Lottery reveals that scrolling through social media has become a genuine hobby for one in four UK adults, but many are now seeking to break free from their screens. The research highlights a growing desire among Britons to explore more diverse and enriching activities outside the digital realm.
According to the survey, which involved 4,000 adults across the UK, 24% consider social media scrolling a genuine hobby. This digital pastime has eclipsed traditional cultural and outdoor activities for many, with 41% of people admitting they spend the majority of their free time in front of screens, either on social media or watching TV. Alarmingly, 8% of respondents revealed they do not have any other hobbies.
The impact of this digital lifestyle is evident in the nation’s reduced outdoor activity. The survey found that 16% of people do not engage in any outdoor activities, and 32% use screen time as a way to relax and escape daily stresses. Despite the convenience of digital entertainment, there is a notable yearning for change.
In response to this shift, National Lottery Open Week, ran from 9th to 17th March, is offering a range of special promotions to encourage people to explore new experiences. As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, The National Lottery is providing free entry and discounts at numerous National Lottery-funded venues across the UK. This initiative aims to thank National Lottery players who contribute over £30 million a week to good causes.
Bill Bailey, comedian and musician, and Scarlett Moffatt, TV personality, are ambassadors for National Lottery Open Week. Bailey encourages people to embrace new experiences. “Trying new activities, from paddleboarding to ballroom dancing, has taught me so much about myself and the world,” he said. “Opening up to new experiences can lead to immense joy and deeper connections with others.”
Moffatt echoed this sentiment, sharing her own experience with National Lottery-funded venues. “As a new mum, finding time to try something new can be challenging, but National Lottery Open Week is a fantastic opportunity to explore the UK’s cultural treasures. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the free and discounted offers available.”
The study also reveals that 38% of people are actively working to reduce their social media usage, with a third expressing a desire to pursue new interests if they were to give up social media entirely. Additionally, 23% of respondents are considering deleting their social media accounts to focus on diverse activities. This shift is reflected in New Year’s resolutions, with 32% of individuals setting goals to cut down on digital engagement.
During National Lottery Open Week, participants can use any National Lottery ticket, Scratch card, or Instant Win Game to gain free entry or special offers at various attractions. These include National Trust sites, English Heritage properties, RSPB locations, and popular destinations such as the Eden Project, Wembley Stadium, and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
