With the festive season in full swing, feelings of loneliness can intensify – particularly for those living alone or far from family. To address this, Visiting Angels, an in-home care company led by Managing Director Ranjit Khunti, is hosting twice-monthly Meet and Make Friends mornings at Dobbies Garden Centre. These relaxed, welcoming events offer anyone in the community a chance to connect over a cup of tea and biscuits.
“Loneliness can feel especially overwhelming during the holidays,” said Ranjit. “These mornings aren’t just about coffee and conversation – they’re about creating a lifeline for those who need to feel seen, heard and valued. Sometimes, having a safe place to sit, share your thoughts or simply enjoy a friendly atmosphere can make all the difference.”
Held every second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 11:00am to 12:00pm, the Meet and Make Friends mornings are free and open to all. Attendees are greeted by the Visiting Angels team, who provide a listening ear in a warm, inclusive environment.
“Recently, a visitor travelled all the way from Loughborough to join us,” shared Ranjit. “She opened up about her anxieties and challenges, and it was humbling to watch her leave with renewed confidence and a sense of clarity. Moments like these are why we host these events – to offer a safe haven where people feel supported and empowered.”
Recognising how tough the holidays can be, Ranjit has shared his practical advice for fostering connections this season with these three tips:
1. Reach out
“Small gestures – like sending a handwritten card or baking for a neighbour – can open doors to meaningful connections,” explained Ranjit. “It doesn’t have to be elaborate. A short note or a simple gift shows you’ve thought of someone, and that can brighten a day in ways you may not realise. Often, it’s the simplest acts that create the most profound impact – especially for those who might not have family close by.”
He stressed that reaching out is not limited to people you already know. “Sometimes, a kind word to a stranger – like your postman or a shop assistant – can make them feel appreciated too. The ripple effect of kindness is powerful, especially during the holidays.”
2. Join festive events or groups
“Take part in holiday-themed activities, from local markets to crafting workshops,” suggested Ranjit. “There’s something special about sharing experiences in a festive setting – it naturally creates opportunities to form friendships.”
Ranjit highlighted that even if attending events feels daunting, it is worth taking the step. “It can feel intimidating to join a new group but remember, most people are looking for connection too. Try attending with a friend or start by saying hello to just one person. Over time, those small interactions can turn into meaningful friendships.”
3. Lend a helping hand
“Volunteering at community events or projects is a wonderful way to meet like-minded people while making a difference,” added Ranjit. “Helping others not only benefits the community but also brings a sense of purpose and fulfilment to your own life.”
He noted that volunteering does not have to be formal. “It could be as simple as helping an elderly neighbour with their groceries or joining a local charity drive. Acts of kindness, especially during the festive season, create genuine bonds that often outlast the holidays.”
And in the spirit of giving, Visiting Angels also supported the recent Christmas Tree Festival at Holy Trinity Church in Barrow upon Soar, working closely with Church Warden Kath Eastwood-Paramore and her team. They also sponsored the festival’s grand opening and the accompanying ESNA Night at the Musicals event.
“Our work goes beyond providing care for our clients,” explained Ranjit. “It’s about fostering a sense of community and connection in South Leicestershire. Whether through Meet and Make Friends mornings or supporting local initiatives like the Christmas Tree Festival, we are committed to ensuring no one feels forgotten, especially during the holidays.”
