In a significant stride towards sustainable transport, Volvo Trucks and global logistics giant DSV have signed a landmark agreement for the delivery of 300 electric heavy trucks. This deal, one of the largest commercial orders for Volvo’s electric trucks to date, positions DSV as one of the leading companies in Europe with a substantial fleet of electric heavy-duty vehicles.
A Move Towards Greener Logistics
DSV, a global leader in the transport and logistics sector, is accelerating its transition to more sustainable operations on roads across Europe. The company, which daily operates thousands of trucks to transport goods worldwide, is increasingly shifting towards vehicles that are either electric or powered by renewable fuels. This new agreement with Volvo Trucks marks a significant milestone in DSV’s broader plan to deploy 2,000 electric trucks by 2030, with these 300 new vehicles forming a core part of that strategy.
The trucks will be delivered between 2024 and 2026 and will include Volvo’s latest FH Aero Electric model, which features advanced aerodynamics to enhance energy efficiency further. Alongside the electric vehicles, the agreement also covers the provision of 500 Volvo trucks equipped with highly fuel-efficient diesel and gas drivelines, reinforcing DSV’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint across its entire fleet.
Commitment to Sustainable Transport
Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, expressed pride in the deepening partnership with DSV, emphasising the importance of collaboration in achieving substantial reductions in CO2 emissions within the transport industry. “This order is proof of their trust in our company and shows that zero-exhaust emissions transport is a viable solution here and now,” Alm stated, highlighting the immediate impact of the new fleet on reducing emissions.
Søren Schmidt, CEO of DSV Road, echoed these sentiments, stressing the critical role that cross-sector collaboration plays in combating climate change. “As a global leader in logistics, we must try to stay at the forefront of the green transition. This agreement is a fantastic example of how new technologies can be brought to market at scale to make them more accessible for our customers,” Schmidt said. He added that the partnership with Volvo is a pivotal step towards a more sustainable future in the trucking industry.
A Leading Fleet in Europe
With this order, DSV will establish one of the largest company fleets of electric heavy trucks in Europe, underscoring the company’s leadership in sustainable logistics. The new fleet will not only enhance DSV’s operational capabilities but also set a precedent in the logistics industry for large-scale adoption of electric vehicles.
DSV already operates electric trucks from Volvo in Sweden and Denmark, supported by charging infrastructure powered by solar energy at its distribution centres in both countries. The new trucks will further bolster these efforts, aligning with the company’s commitment to the Science-Based Targets initiative, which drives ambitious climate action consistent with the Paris Agreement.
Volvo’s Global Electric Truck Expansion
Since 2019, Volvo Trucks has delivered over 3,800 electric trucks to customers across 46 countries, making it a global leader in the electric truck market. The company offers the industry’s broadest range of electric vehicles, with eight models catering to diverse applications from urban distribution and waste management to regional haulage and construction. Volvo’s electric trucks have collectively covered more than 90 million kilometres—equivalent to 2,200 laps around the world—demonstrating their reliability and effectiveness in real-world operations.
As the demand for sustainable transport solutions grows, the partnership between Volvo Trucks and DSV stands as a significant example of how leading companies are working together to drive the green transition in logistics and beyond.
