Adtran has introduced a cutting-edge solution for precision timekeeping with its new Oscilloquartz Time Scale System, designed to meet the stringent requirements of national metrology institutes, aerospace, and national defence sectors. The comprehensive system aims to address the growing need for accurate and reliable time synchronization, particularly in environments where GPS/GNSS signals may be interrupted.
The Oscilloquartz Time Scale System integrates a range of advanced timekeeping technologies, including Adtran’s Oscilloquartz grandmaster clocks, GPS/GNSS receivers, and high-performance optical cesium atomic clocks. By combining these elements with a phase comparator, reference generator, and time interval counter, the system ensures precise synchronization with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) while safeguarding against cybersecurity threats.
Gil Biran, General Manager of Oscilloquartz at Adtran, highlighted the significance of the new system: “The launch of our Time Scale System represents a major advancement in precision timekeeping. By leveraging our industry-first high-performance optical cesium atomic clocks and integrating multiple clock types into a single, stable time scale, this solution offers unmatched accuracy and resilience.” He emphasised that as industries such as national metrology, defence, and aerospace face increasing demands for precision, this system will deliver the reliability needed for critical applications.
The Oscilloquartz Time Scale System distinguishes itself by integrating up to eight different types of clocks, including optical cesium atomic clocks, hydrogen maser clocks, and GNSS receivers, into a unified time scale. The system employs multi-channel measurement technology to compute time differences and consolidate them into a single output. It supports various outputs, including 5MHz, 10MHz, 1PPS, TOD, and IRIG-B, and is compatible with NTP and PTP protocols, offering flexible support for diverse infrastructures.
One of the key features of the system is its ability to maintain nanosecond precision even during GPS/GNSS outages, thanks to its real-time monitoring and data archiving capabilities. Additionally, the system automatically generates BIPM (Bureau International des Poids et Mesures) reports, aiding institutes in maintaining global time standards.
Patrick Berthoud, Chief Scientist for Time and Frequency at Oscilloquartz, added: “Our Time Scale System will be crucial in advancing global timekeeping standards. It provides real-time monitoring and seamless integration with existing infrastructures, ensuring synchronization with UTC and protection against potential disruptions.” He also noted the system’s modular and customizable design, which allows for close collaboration with clients to tailor solutions to their specific needs, whether for unique frequency sources or enhanced GPS/GNSS resilience.
The Oscilloquartz Time Scale System is presented as a turnkey solution with options for customization, integration, staging, and compliance with local legal time providers. This new offering underscores Adtran’s commitment to leading innovation in timekeeping technology, ensuring that their solutions meet the highest standards of accuracy, security, and performance.
